ViennaThe Essential Guide to Vienna's Techno Scene
From legendary underground clubs to hidden warehouse raves — everything you need to know before your first night out in Vienna.
Vienna has one of Europe's most respected underground music scenes. What started in repurposed industrial spaces in the early 2000s has evolved into a thriving ecosystem of clubs, collectives, and record shops that punch well above their weight on the global stage.
This guide covers everything you need — the essential venues, unwritten rules, and insider tips to navigate the city's nightlife like a local.
When to Go
Vienna clubs rarely fill up before 1am. Doors open at midnight but arriving before 2am on a Friday or Saturday means an empty dancefloor. Locals eat late, pre-drink at a Beisl, and arrive when the energy peaks.
The best nights are Friday and Saturday, but Thursday has become increasingly strong — especially at Flex, which runs its Praterstern series. Sunday afternoons at Pratersauna draw a devoted crowd that keeps going until Monday morning.
Door Policy
Vienna's club doors are selective but not aggressive. Dress practically — dark clothing, no sportswear. Groups of more than four men may face longer waits. Being visibly drunk is an instant no. Speak calmly, be genuine about knowing the music.
Vienna doesn't need to compete with Berlin. It has its own tempo, its own crowd, its own sound. Come without expectations and it will surprise you every time.

Do Vienna clubs have a coat check?
Almost all do — and it's mandatory at most venues. Expect €2–3. Never try to sneak a coat onto the dancefloor.
Is cash required?
Yes. Most Viennese clubs are cash-only at the bar and door. There are ATMs near Flex and Pratersauna but bring cash to avoid queues.
What time do clubs close?
No fixed closing time. Flex regularly runs until 8am Sunday. Pratersauna has been known to go past noon on Sunday. Come with no plans the next morning.
Is photography allowed inside?
Phones away on the dancefloor — this is enforced strictly at most venues. Some run phone-free nights entirely. Respect it.
